the unusual in nature... rick byerly's fine art photography
there are hundreds of millions of cameras in the world.
why take the time to look at my images?

ice figure
images should really speak for themselves as to their uniqueness and concepts.
isn't that the point of photography?

ice figure
most people understandably want the recognizable in photography,
whether it's people, landscapes and the like.

the closest i come to that is finding odd shapes and faces

is always about faces in nature?

a texture can be compelling in of itself

i am passionate about removing frames of reference
and looking for the unusual in nature

you use a digital slr and photoshop everything, right?

yellowstone thermal water
all of my work from 2008/2009 is about photographing in the right light
and not bumping up contrast, saturation and the like, nor cropping or
removing/adding anything...

in many cases no adjustments whatsoever have been made
whether it's in camera or post production

art photographers find themselves in a catch 22 a lot of the time
with people at large and the "art world"

yellowstone thermal water
artists of other mediums concentrate on what moves them

yellowstone thermal water
not what conventional wisdom dictates

yellowstone thermal water
i focus on a pattern, movement, or texture unlikely to repeat itself in nature.

our eyes are trained
to see the conventional too often
and some things are just too odd to pass up

life's too predictable
to be so obvious

Rick's primary passion and goal with photography is to seek out the unusual in nature and offer it in a seldom accessed way. In removing frame of reference for a particular part of nature he zooms in and captures texture, light, color, and movement for the purpose of bringing forth previously unseen images. Photography conventionally lends itself to what people can easily reference or identify with. This is far from what drives Rick to a camera and to the unusual in the natural world. The unusual can range from patterns in bacteria colored thermal waters in Yellowstone to longer exposures of wind crazed snowflakes in a storm on a street.
He trained at Pittsburgh Filmmakers and is an artist member of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh. All of Rick's photography prints follow archival standards and are all part of limited edition series. With few exceptions most prints are part of a one time series of 50, some 25.
